It's a fine machine indeed but I didn't get the Microtel fixed like
I wanted for Diane. I was going to network them and transfer
the files from the Dell to the Microtel first.
When I got there Curly had already put the Microtel over at Diane's
place and hooked the new Acer up at his place and the Dell was
sitting in the floor.
I set up a network between the Acer and the Microtel and copied
all Curly's files and pictures over to the Acer.
I downloaded AVG free antivirus and ran decrapifier on the new
machine and took off all the trialware and crap including all the
Norton stuff, it took a couple of passes and some direct
intervention on the Norton stuff but I got it and then installed the
AVG. I took off Adobe Reader and installed foxit reader in it's
place and I installed 7zip for compressed files. I downloaded
Microsoft's free VPC and installed it and installed XP Pro on it
and made a copy on his external hard drive and renamed it safe
and copied it back and had two. I installed Returnil on both of
them but left it turned on on safe XP so no matter what happens
it'll all be gone when it boots unless he saves anything he wants
to keep on the Z partition it made. So he's got two XP virtual
machines he can use instead of Vista if he wants to.
On the one he gave Diane I ran the antivirus and malware
removal tools and got it running good. I didn't fix her a brand
new one like she wanted but moved all Curly's stuff that I'd
already copied into a seperate folder I created so her documents
and picture folder are empty except for the sample pictures that
came on it, I left those.
I made a real bad burnt spot under Diane's desk where I must
have dropped a cigarette and let it burn up while I wss
engrossed. Oh well, I didn't go back over today and e-mailed
Curly that I better bring the Dell over here and try and burn
what she wanted to CDs. I've either got to empty that hard
drive and run eraser to make sure nothing can be recovered to
make Curly happy or he's thinking about having Diane buy
another hard drive for it so it'll be safe. It's to go to Diane's
grand kids after I reinstall XP and get it ready. Diane's in
West Palm Beach but she's supposed to come home today I
think.
