Cisco Valet Failure

Opened it up, tore off the shrink wrap without paying much attention. Nice box.
Got out the adapter and hooked it up. Started getting the setup USB drive out and
it just fell out of the plastic over it. I stopped and thought, it's been opened before.
I paused and thought a few seconds and went ahead and stuck in the USB stick for
setup.

Didn't fire up automatically, went to it in computer and tried setup.exe, didn't work.
Tried Connect.exe and it fired up and I got online. It gave me the user and password
and I copied them to a text file. It didn't show but one page in the setup so I tried to
go to advanced and it passworded me and the included password failed.

Followed the instructions and stuck the key in the other Dell to connect it up and it
passworded me. Password failed again (and again and again). Stuck it back in
the first computer and ran it again and chose connect new device and after two or
three times it did connect but it was still wanting a password on the second PC.
Just ignored it, no other option.

Tried to connect my wife's netbook, same story, tried over and over and about the
10th time it connected without a password. Don't know if I'll have to do that
every time now or not. Not happy with a password that doesn't work anyway
so it doesn't matter.

I guess I'll call Cisco and see if they can give me the correct password (or a
universal one) from there. If not, it's going back to newegg. I'm sure they do
repackage stuff and send it out as new again.

My assessment was wrong, the password works to let me log in to the router.

Trying to add another computer, at some point it says to put the USB key in
the computer I'm trying to connect to and it pops up a thing to log in and that
does not accept the password. Just ignore those directions completely and
when it tells you to do that just click connect right then. Then it waits awhile
for the other machine to try and connect. You have to get on the other machine
and try to connect. If you don't get it the first time try again, and again, until
it does. It took about 10 trys on your Ma's netbook.

I've got four machines connected on one OS each. It doesn't work on the
machine, just the OS so you'd have to do it on both versions of Windows 7 you
have if you want them both to get online. I've got a LOT of installed operating
systems so it's going to be quite a pain.

It doesn't let me see and use the Pogoplug in "Computer" anymore and has no way
to connect to it. The little Pogoplug defeats the Cisco Valet though and it's still
available online when it's turned on. Other than that the Cisco seems secure as hell,
It's harder than durnit to get your own machines on.

My USB thing doesn't start by itself like it's supposed to so I have to go to
"Computer" and open it up. Damn thing has two "Connect.exe" files, pick the newest
one. Mine's at the bottom of the list.

I'm pretty disappointed in how hard it is to set up and not sure I'll keep it hooked
up or not. I have a ton of virtual machines that would probably have to be set up
on their own. I did get a large update for the router but it didn't get any easier to
work.

Sounds like a pain in the ass..Will try tomorrow. You think it matters if I hook it up initially to my home puter while it's on or shut everything down, make the change and then turn it all back on?

I don't know for sure, I shut mine down but it's probably not important. Maybe it'd be
better to switch routers and then plug the USB thing in without a boot.

On the slightly older Dell, after I set it up in Windows 7 and booted it up to Vista,
it just worked in Vista without having to go through all the setip crap.
So probably just need to set up one the hard way and then after booting to the
other it should start trying to set itself up.

Well I'm good to go. Did have to call customer support. The online instructions said to power off my cable modem and wait two minutes and power back on. That didn't hook me up to the net so I called. They had me do it again and the damn thing worked that time. Powered on the work laptop and it found the sinal immediately. Great range now with my laptop.. Always low in the kitchen before and now very good. Even my desktop seems to be faster. Pretty happy all in all!

I'm not so happy with mine. It lost the internet about 11:00 (a few minutes ago) and I had
to unplug the power to it for a couple of minutes and then boot it back up to get online
again. Same thing the Trendnet was doing and the Trendnet isn't near as much trouble
as this darn Cisco. I may send mine back. And, now it doesn't see the Foxconn puter
in Network.

Just thought I'd update this. Mine's working fine now every since I had to
reboot it. Maybe it needed rebooting anyway so the changes would take
effect. I've got the Pogoplug showing up in "Computer" again now.

It's working fine, don't really know about range but it covers everything we
need.('course the ten dollar one did that) I guess it's going to be fine after all.

Good deal Thump..Hope it keeps working well. Working from home tomorrow so I get to sit in the living room and keep an eye on the varmints.

The internet was down this morning, Comcast's fault, got on today
about 9:20. Booted the modem again first then booted the Cisco
and waited on it then I was back online. I'd already done that a few
times but the modem just had the red light so I really was offline.

It went off again about 20 minutes ago but the modem lights were still working.
Looked around the computer to see the Cisco and, dead. Not a light on it was
working. Booted it again and got back on. Not real happy as much money as
I paid for it. It's gone off before but this was quick after a boot, hadn't done
it that soon before. I guess the guarantee is about up.

Just had to boot the Trendnet once a day average I think. $20.00 plus it came
with a USB adapter so the computer can get on wirelessly.

Mine works fine pretty much all the time..Had to unplug it a couple of times but it comes right back..When I go to Wifi on my cell at home , it asks for a password more than I'd like but no biggie.
