About Routers

Everyone I know, even the technically advanced, want
the fastest router they can get.  Haven't checked lately
with people in the know but they probably want the
newer AC that's so much faster it's not even funny.

It used to be the only thing out there was b.  It was
limited to 10.  Then they came out with b/g and it
was 10 times faster at 100.  Nobody makes those any
more, it's b/g/n now or the b/g/n/ac.  The older ones
that are still out there, the b/g at 100 is much faster
than my Comcast which is about 28 to 35.  There's
some good deals out there now on b/g at 100 and
it doesn't help your internet speed at all to get anything
faster.  It just helps move files over your lan faster.

None of my machines uses AC so I'd have to update
all the machines I have that don't support ac.
Maybe some day I'll bother getting faster but
really don't see any need now.

The Belkin was fine when I first started using it but
now it fades away and gone for a while then slides
back in.  With the power surges and lightning coming
in here it's hard to keep one working anyway.  Or
maybe the Belkin just wore out too early on it's own,
don't know.

I still have my Cisco Valet plus. It's probably 5+ years old. Works fine and no complaints. It seems like you got one about the same time and had trouble though.

Yes I did, paid way to much.
The problem was it wouldn't let me change the password
of any of the settings. It would appear to but then didn't.
I had to put in the USB original setup thing and lose
the settings I'd already adjusted when I first installed it.
Security I guess, but how secure is it if it won't let you
change the password. Worked well the way I had it
except I couldn't allow upstream.

Lightning killed it. It destroyed all the Cat 5 connections
including the internet in one except one that wasn't
connected to any device.

I still have it but moved it up to the building when I
was trying to clean up. Still works wireless if I cheat
and plug in the cable to the one port that wasn't
destroyed. Pops up a "This device hasn't been
configured, would you like to configure now" when you
sign in. Just click no, it can't configure plugged in that
connection anyway. Must have had a pretty good internal
antenna and covered the whole house. Probably not as
good as one with an external antenna though.
I probably ought to go get it but I have new routers coming
and can use Xfinity from the Comcast guest account, just
have to put in the password once and then our devices
remember it and we don't have to do it again.
