I tried the free RDC in Windows but there's some problem Vista to XP
and vice versa.
Tried FreeVNC but you have to get the paid one to work with Vista.

I already got the old $300Dell networked and can move stuff over the LAN to the $500Dell. The 300 is running the magicjack and I've got it set to run headlessly for that and can turn the monitor off. I just push the power button now and it boots straight in again and to cut it off just press the Windows key and then press u and then press u again and it shuts down.

It'd be better though if I got a remote desktop setup so I could run it with the mouse, and keyboard, and see it on the monitor on the 500Dell.
300 Dell address = 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.102)
It has to be changed to 102 at the end or it doesn't work.

500 Dell address = 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.100%13)

I think I'll try UltraVNC next. It's free for personal use and can evidently work across the different operating systems (I think)

NetSupport isn't free but it's supposed to be the best, I may see if they have a free trial and if I like it i'll aquire one somewhere.

I've been trying to run the old Dell without a monitor and wanted to
sit where I always sit, at the main machine and use the large LCD
screen and the same mouse and keyboard.

I got it. I wish I knew how I did it now.
It was hard to see the monitor and I hurt from getting
down and squeezing in beside it.
I installed UltraVNC Viewer on both machines and
that didn't work.
Remote Desktop Uvnc11

and after it wouldn't connect it popped up:
Remote Desktop Uvnc12

Then I remembered about the server and got back
down in the floor and googled it and finally found a
download and installed it. I sure can't write a how-to
but here's some screenshots of it running:
Some Screenshots

I just really hope it's not too hard to connect again.
I'm afraid to turn it off now.
PS: Password = BEER before I forget.

Did you give up on the kvm idea? Let me know what kind of cables it needs as there are cables all around my work area.

It's on the back burner now since the remote desktop is preferable
to the switch and my long term plans. I do want to try it sometime
'cause I like to see how everything works. The cheapest cables are
twenty some dollars to over a hundred. Some of them have their
own built in KVM switches though but not the cheapest ones.
Newegg has a KVM with permanently attached cables for $18.99.
I just wasn't knowledgable enough when I ordered.

My vague idea for an indefinate time to accomplish is to do the
exact opposite and have dual monitors, not dual computers.
The remote desktop was offered as a better idea by some of
the kids and it's great. I sat right here in the same place I usually
sit and ran the antivirus on it yesterday and last night on the old Dell,
just in a window here that I can minimize and go on working. It works
really great and I just have to see now if I've got it set to start
automatically on the old Dell so I don't have to have a monitor on it
to turn it on.
I think I do.
