Retrieve the Software Installation Keys From Your PC

You know how it is. You buy some software on CD, or online, and install it. The program works perfectly for ages. And then one day it doesn't. Or you change your PC.

Time for a reinstall of your applications. Except that you forgot to write down the installation key of that software, and the CD case (or confirmation email) has long since been lost. So you face the prospect of having to buy another licence for that can't-do-without application.

If that sounds familiar, here's a possible solution. A tiny, free utility for Windows (XP and above) that retrieves and displays the installation keys for loads of Windows apps. Here's part of the report that it produced for one of my PCs, for example:

I might give that a shot Thump. I really don't have alot of purchased software/ apps like that although I did buy wondershare DVD slideshow builder a couple of yrs ago that does a much better job of making movies than windows movie maker. Not sure if it would find the license or not as I doubt I still have it anywhere. Maybe Microsoft has a better program now in Windows 7 anyway.

Whoops, didn't think it through. It almost certainly won't work anyway on the OS that comes
with the Dell 'cause the Dell comes with 64 bit. You could shrink the one that comes installed
(just the huge unused part) and install Windows 7 32 bit or you can probably use it in a virtual
machine with XP installed if you can find it.

Yeah, Windows 7 comes with a much more robust version but requires relearning how to use
it. Whole new ballgame.
